Inflation in Poland: how to read Statistics Poland’s figures
Annual and monthly price changes tell different stories. What does the consumer price index actually measure?
The consumer price index describes changes in the prices of a basket of household spending. Statistics Poland publishes data that allow price levels to be compared across periods.
A year-on-year change compares the same period in consecutive years. A month-on-month change takes a shorter view. These figures are not interchangeable and may describe different parts of the same story.
Slower inflation does not necessarily mean falling prices. Prices may still be rising, only more slowly. Individual households can experience different changes because their spending patterns differ.
When comparing releases, check the date, reference period and whether figures are preliminary. This guide explains how to read the releases; it does not present an unverified current inflation rate.
